First announced was their revenue for their fiscal year. Their Macintosh computers sold a cool 22 billion alone, which would place Apple as #110 in the fortune 500 companies. However, that was only 33% of their total revenue.
The Macintosh is now well over 20% of the share of the PC market in America. That means that one in five computers sold are Macs. The Mac is also #1 in Consumer Reports for the tenth consecutive year.
Apple's New Store in Shanghai.
Steve Jobs went on to discuss the future of their software.
"I'd like to talk about iLife. It's widely regarded as the best suite of digital lifestyle apps in the world. You can't do this on any other computer." Steve Jobs said as he announced the new version of iLife dubbed "iLife '11". I'm just gonna say this once. I am really pumped about this update!
New iLife box art.
New features included a full screen view option for iPhoto, in addition to new books, themes, cards, and social enhancements for emailing, Flickr and FaceBook. iMovie got new themes, audio editing tools, and really cool additions like facial recognition and a movie trailer layout mode, with music supplied by the London Symphony. Garageband also received some nice editing enhancement tools.
The biggest new feature? It comes free on every new Mac, and upgrading only costs $50. I already ordered mine. like 5 hours ago.
More software news, FaceTime came to the Mac today, and Apple announced their new operating system; OS X: Lion. the past decade of their signature OS has been themed on "Big Cats;" 10.0 and 10.1 were Cheetah and Puma, respectively, followed by Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and their current OS (10.6) Snow Leopard. Now all that's left is the cougar, and maybe bobcat.
This is where the theme of the media summit came into being; coign full swing back to the Mac. ever since 2007 with the intro of the iPhone, Apple had continually used cool new features made specifically for the mac, and brought them to their portable OS.
Now, they are bringing some key features specifically for the portables, and bringing it Back To The Mac. (See what they did there??)
Apple's innovations getting fully recycled.
some of these new features include an App store, Full screen applications, more multi-touch goodness, and home screens. I am particularly pleased and excited for the new feature known as "Mission Control," which combines the new Dash Board, Spaces, Exposé, and also full screen apps into something amazing. Like seriously.
Mission Control. Productivity launching in 3... 2... 1...
BUT WAIT! THERE'S ONE MORE THING!!
The final thing to be announced was a new MacBook Air, which, albeit, is thinner that the latest version, because it borrows some hardware design features from the iPad, like an extremely high-resolution display, and flash memory built directly on the motherboard.
You can now buy an Air for $500 less than yesterday, but I'd rather get a Pro for the same price, but with more storage and faster processors.
